Love Lost, Rights Gained

As Valentine’s Day approaches, the translator and editor of Muus vs. Muus, Professor Kari Lie Dorer, takes us on a deep dive into the sensational 1880s case that became a flashpoint for Norwegian-American immigrant life, religion, and the emerging struggle for women’s rights. We’ll explore the tragic, personal story of Oline Pind Muus, the wife of prominent Pastor Bernt Julius Muus. What began as a crisis of “love lost” in a difficult marriage escalated into a very public battle over Oline’s inheritance and her treatment as a pastor’s wife. Kari is the King Olav V Chair in Scandinavian-American Studies, the Norwegian Department Chair, and Program Director of Nordic Studies at St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN.

Moose is Loose

From the big-eyed white-tailed deer in our Minnesota yards, to the caribou of Alaska’s tundra, to the big-limbed moose of the north woods, traveling naturalist Melonie Shipman has been engaged with the deer family for decades. We’ll explore their special adaptations and lifestyles as vegetarians who must manage long, snowy winters and multiple predators just to survive another day. You’ll look with new eyes at animals you may have seen many times in your life. Now you’ll know the rest of the story!

A suggested donation of $10.00 per person covers the entire cost.
