Sunday School is for everyone on October 8th! Bring the whole family for an author’s reading of Dr. Claudia May’s children’s book, “When I Fly With Papa!” After the young ones head to Sunday School, stick around for an adult discussion about spiritual freedom which will enrich conversations with the kids in your life!
Dr. Claudia May bio
Claudia May, Ph.D., is a poet, educator, and an award-winning author. Her children’s book, “When I Fly with Papa,” received a gold medal at the 2019 Illumination Book Awards in the Enduring Light Christian Children’s Book Category. Her children’s book also received a gold medal in the Midwest Book Awards Religion/Philosophy/ Spirituality category and first place in the 2019 Purple Dragonfly Award Category: Picture Books, 6 and Older.
May’s recent poetic work, “Slice,” published in Families, Systems, & Health, explores how nineteenth century African American enslaved mothers endured invasive surgeries after surviving arduous labors. Her collection of poetry, Birthing Butterflies, will be published in 2024, (Finishing Line Press).
In addition to writing poetry, she is a scholar and the co-editor of the forthcoming anthology Science and Religion: Perspectives Across Disciplines (Lexington Books/Rowman & Littlefield, 2023). She is also the author of the devotional Jesus is Enough: Love, Hope, and Comfort in the Storms of Life (Augsburg).
May is a Professor and Program Director of Reconciliation Studies, Bethel University, Saint Paul, Minnesota. She is a specialist in African American, Caribbean, and Ethnic American literature, and Practical Theology. She has more than two decades of experience working alongside global practitioners of reconciliation.
She is also the Executive Director of the Center for Community Engaged Learning, Bethel University, Saint Paul, Minnesota. Throughout her extensive teaching career Dr. May has incorporated community learning models and strategies in the courses she teaches and manages. She has designed courses emphasizing the importance of place-based academic and community-minded partnerships for the student learning experience. She delivers lectures, facilitates workshops, and provides consultations on the benefits of community-engaged learning in higher education.
May enjoys her ministry as a trained spiritual director. She also consults on developing community-engaged learning partnerships, leads workshops focused on exploring spiritual formation practices, and facilitates programs that advance reconciliation initiatives.
